Oppenheimer: A Cinematic Review

After watching the movie, I hardly felt the 3-hour duration, even feeling a bit unsatisfied when it ended. The political figure, Strauss, showcased his brilliant tactics, especially during the final revelations and his unexpected defeat, which was truly captivating.

From the dark perspective portrayed in the movie, some of his actions and viewpoints might seem a bit petty, but they’re not entirely incomprehensible. And while he’s painted as the villain in this event, in reality, he has done a lot of charitable work. The so-called antagonist’s character is intricately built.

Towards the end, Einstein’s responses hinted at history’s rhyme: Oppenheimer got his just desserts. Their conversation by the lake felt reminiscent of the legendary Su Wu(stubborn patriot) and Wei Qing(have to commit to other countries) in the Han Dynasty.

In battle, in the forest, at the precipice in the mountains,

On the dark great sea, in the midst of javelins and arrows,

In sleep, in confusion, in the depths of shame,

The good deeds a man has done before defend him.

The climax was entirely shaken by Dr. Hill. When he stated that neither he nor other scientists believed that the committee had the right to interrogate someone who made significant contributions to the atomic bomb, solely because he spoke his mind and was honest about his thoughts, I was deeply moved. When he apologized for his outburst, I was stirred. I thought to myself, “That’s a real man.” (I might not remember the exact words, but that’s the gist.)

Oppenheimer had a supportive wife, standing by him through thick and thin. When someone understands you in this world, you can face all societal criticisms fearlessly. And when his wife struggled with their child, he didn’t blame her excessively, seemingly understanding that he too had responsibilities towards their child. Both of them, in their “selfishness,” were driven by a greater ideal.

The movie’s portrayal of Oppenheimer successfully captured the complexity of his character, highlighting both his insignificance and significance in historical events. On one hand, he seemed too small to cause any significant ripples. On the other, collectively, they accomplished something that changed the world’s future trajectory. Science, albeit reluctantly, served politics.

He undoubtedly understood scientists, even considering their families. His idea to build a town for them was brilliant. He could unite scientists with distinct personalities, driving them to research for the nation’s honor. His efforts to retain Taylor, offering weekly 1-hour chats, showcased Oppenheimer’s patriotism through actions.

He also understood the innate curiosity of scientists when facing the unknown, exploring cutting-edge technologies. Realizing too late, this curiosity might come at the cost of destroying the world. With a near-zero probability, did he pray for divine intervention in that split second before the event?

During the hearing segment, I was quite anxious. I couldn’t understand why a person’s views, changing over time and events, could be ridiculed or even lead to psychological attacks. When the lawyer yelled at him, I wondered if Oppenheimer felt that he was enduring what he deserved.

His loving wife knew they had to fight. But he didn’t. He seemed to deliberately make things hard for himself, holding onto a certain elegance and non-confrontation. Yet, he wasn’t entirely non-confrontational. He wanted to prove his innocence, to stand upright between heaven and earth. Watching him being forced to defend himself was heart-wrenching.

After watching the movie in the afternoon, I spent the evening on Wikipedia, browsing the life stories of familiar names from the film. I was surprised that Oppenheimer’s true vindication took so many years:

Life is long, and misunderstandings are bound to happen. The same experiences can be interpreted differently by different people.

Is the focus on their interpretations? Their views? No, it’s about what one wants to rely on for a living, growing from within. It’s about choosing a way of life and the actions and sacrifices made for it, which are willingly accepted.
